As per the report of the World Health Organisation (WHO), there are about 100 Lakh blind persons in India, it could be double by 2020. Of these 10 million, nearly 2.5 million are blind due to corneal diseases.
Despite all the measuresrelated to increasing public awareness and celebrities making concerted efforts to yield social influence for eye donation movement,
There is a lot of gaps between demand and donation led supply of corneas in the country. Despite technological advancements, this grave problem continued to be unsolved as the number of corneas donated falls way below the requirement found.
In India, corneal disease is second only to cataract for causing blindness.
Why Should We Become Eye Donor ?
Donating our eyes can lighten up the life at maximum two person .
How can we become eye donor?
Anyone one may donate eye. There is no age-limit to donate eye. All one needs to do is to just take a simple pledge to donate the eyes after the death. While taking a pledge during ones lifetime itself is a great noble deed> However, its fulfillment, just requires the support of the relatives or friends as nee to carry out the wish of eye donation of the deceased.
Note: It is to note that a person who is using spectacles, suffering from diabetes, hypertension, asthma and cataract can also donate his/her eyes. However, person suffering from communicable diseases cannot donate his/her eyes.
